To wit:
“Pulp fiction authors have a special-something that most of us don’t have.
They had to have that special something, because in the early days of publishing, they were only paid well if they were able to crank out large volumes of story telling.
Honestly, they couldn’t spend two years writing the novel of a lifetime.
Most of them cut their teeth writing short stories for print magazines and newspapers.
But here is the thing that really supported their growth as writers…The wrote serialized short stories, that for all intents-and-purposes enabled them to write a chapter a day, and a novel in a month.
The print magazines and newspapers had very firm deadlines, and if they didn’t make the deadline, the pulp writers would lose a good-paying job.
Considering that Lester Dent started writing his “Doc Savage” stories during the Great Depression, then he needed to bring his extra something-special to ensure that he didn’t need to stand in bread lines to feed his family.
As they say, “necessity is the mother of all invention.”Out of necessity, Lester Dent had to learn how to write fast, write fluently, and create characters that enthralled his readers.
If he didn’t, there was still the bread lines.Even Ray Bradbury and F. Scott Fitzgerald cut their writing teeth with the pulp fiction trade. 🙂 The fact that you know their names is testament to the power of pulp fiction.
